Prestressed Concrete

Pre-stressed concrete refers to concrete that is heavily "prestressed” during its production. Concrete that has been pre-stressed during its production is stronger and more resilient to tensile force. The process is also known as a pre-tensioning process. The process involves high-strength concrete.

Pre-tensioning

Pre-tensioning is a technique used to install tendons into prestressed concrete structures. A pre-tensioning beam has a connecting groove at the top and a crane rail on the bottom. The beam includes a series of springs placed between the top of the crane rail and the connecting groove. These springs adjust automatically to the correct position when the crane in use.

A prestressed concrete beam will move approximately 4% of the length. This displacement is due to the prestressing of the beam. In a ten-meter span, a pre-tensioned cable has an eccentricity of 100mm at the center of the span.

Optical Fibers

As a way of monitoring prestress force, optical fibres are being used to make prestressed concrete. To measure strain in the strand, these fibers are embedded within a core wire. This can be a steel rod, a CFRP, or GFRProd. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG, or Fiber Bragg) is used for the optical sensor. In addition to using optical fibers, other technologies are being used to increase the precision of measurement.

These fiber sensors are used for real-time structural monitoring. This is especially useful for buildings and strategic infrastructures. Fiber sensors were placed on a variety of precast beams, and mild steel posts to collect data. This was the basis for a recent study on the Bari Bridge. The data collected allowed researchers to evaluate how shrinkage has affected the overall performance of the precast beams in response to changing loads.

High-strength concrete required

Cracking in prestressed concrete

The stress intensity factor (SIF) is a mathematical variable that represents the cracking toughness of a structure. It depends on the amount of stress applied to the flaw, its size and the structural geometry. The SIF has three primary modes of fracture. Mode I, mode II and mode 3 are all possible. In the case of prestressed concrete sleepers, Mode I is used as the crack pattern.

Precast concrete structures are usually pretreated with 8 mm diameter wires. These wires may suffer a substantial reduction in their mechanical performance. A dynamic analysis can detect a stressed corroded wire before it reaches a point of brittle failure. A wire that is stressed corroded can also have internal defects that may affect its service life.
